A world where science and art intertwine

On July 7, Oikonos and the Seymour Center hosted an art exhibition highlighting artwork from four local artists that spent a few days completely immersed in the ecological wonders of Año Nuevo Island. Each artist created pieces that reflect their experience on the island through their unique styles and lenses. Over 150 attendees came eager to learn about the seabird research and monitoring occurring on the island while enjoying the beautiful artwork.

Meet the artists and take a look at their final pieces!

Bridget Bailey

Bridget was one of the four artists that displayed her work at this event. She graduated from CSUMB with a certificate in scientific illustration last year and has been working as a freelance scientific illustrator and designer since.

The first of Bridget’s pieces includes a detailed rendition of a Western Gull nest with eggs and various scraps that the gulls tend to use for their nests.
The second of her pieces is a Gouache landscape of the cliffs on the west side of the island; this piece features Brandt’s Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Elephant Seals, and Western Gulls interacting with the beautiful yet harsh coastal environment.
Hannah Kanne

Hannah was also an artist that spent time at Año Nuevo Island and created artworks to be included in the showcase. She received her B.F.A. in Studio art with an emphasis on Scientific Illustration and received her certificate in Scientific illustration from Cal State University, Monterey Bay.

Hannah’s art focused on the highly variable nesting habits of our resident seabird species depicting burrowing Cassin’s and Rhinoceros Auklets, cliff-dwelling Pigeon Guillemots and Pelagic Cormorants, and others you can find around the island!

Constance Speer

Constance was another artist that showcased her work at this event. She attends CSUMB where she discovered her love for scientific illustration and hopes that her illustrations serve as a reminder of the beauty found in moments of tranquil observation.
Constance’s illustration depicts Brandt’s Cormorants, Western Gulls, and Black Oystercatchers illuminated by sunlight peeking through a dark sky.

Constance created a coloring page with a Black Oystercatcher and one with resident pinnipeds accompanied by a Western Gull. Download them here to color them!

Lizzie Schafer

Lizzie has a long history with painting and began exploring natural history illustration during UCSC’s Natural History Field Quarter. She is set to begin her final year at UCSC with a bachelor’s in environmental studies.

Her illustrations included a detailed series of Brandt Cormorant mating behaviors and a watercolor treasure map of the island including buildings (in use and abandoned), and many other species you can find around the island!
