Isla Mocha
Oikonos has been working for more than ten years in this unique territory of the world because of its rich biodiversity and history. At Isla Mocha we promote research and conservation projects that seek to preserve its ecosystems over time.
History
Isla Mocha is home to one of the most pristine temperate rainforests with a large presence of olivillo (Aextoxicon punctatum) that remain in the region. 70% of the world’s Pink-footed Shearwater population nests among the roots of this forest. This species that only nests in Chile migrates to Alaska in the boreal summer, uniting countries, communities and scientists in its long migratory routes.

Context
Oikonos has worked in the conservation of the Pink-footed Shearwater since 2010, getting involved in research that allows decision-making through knowledge. We have also focused on working with the local community to improve the protection of the natural treasures that inhabit this small, but unique island in the south of Chile.

Vision
Research, environmental education and working with the local Mocha Island community are long-term processes. We aspire to strengthen our relationship and trust with the local community, linking research with environmental care and the sustainable development of Mocha Island. Our commitment is permanent until we have installed the capabilities and passion for conservation in this territory.
Impact
- We collaborated with various partners to create the Conservation Plan for Pink-footed Shearwaters (Ardenna creatopus) in Mocha Island.
- We have implemented pet sterilization campaigns since 2014, which has kept the island’s dog and cat population stable, one of the main threats to Pink-footed Shearwater in the island.
- We established the annual sporting event “Copa Fardela” that celebrates the arrival of sheartwaters on the island and has become a local tradition.
- We implemented a permanent environmental education program in the kindergarten and local school, reaching all the children of the island.
