The Pink-footed Shearwater (Puffinus creatopus) is listed as Vulnerable by IUCN and is included in Appendix 1 of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. The government of Chile has listed the species as nationally endangered and is devoting resources to its conservation. With support from local residents, the Chilean federal government (Corporación Nacional Forestal, or CONAF), American Bird Conservancy and the Canadian Wildlife Service, Oikonos has begun a community-based conservation initiative on Isla Mocha. The key strategies are to build capacity in the community to protect breeding birds and to investigate threats at-sea when they encounter human activities in the territorial waters of at least seven countries.

During the last week of April 2011, Josh Adams and Valentina Colodro, together with the Isla Mocha park rangers (Alejandro, Benito, and Jaime) attached 9 small, solar-powered satellite transmitters to breeding adults on Isla Mocha, Chile. Chicks will soon fledge (early May) and the adults have initiated their post-breeding northern migration along the entire coast of the Americas. View Live Maps courtesy of Seaturtle.org.

Hotspots off North America - July to October 2009

For the first time, Pink-footed Shearwater (Puffinus creatopus) movements were tracked from a wintering hotspot off Southern California using solar-powered satellite transmitters. Archived maps of five birds as they traveled between important wintering areas off North America.

The species is threatened by coastal fishing activities and pollution throughout their marine range.

Migration from colonies in Chile - April to July 2006

Five Pink-footed Shearwaters were tracked with solar-powered satellite tags from a breeding colony in the Juan Fernández Archipelago (670 km off the coast of central Chile) to learn about their migration patterns and threats.

Juan Fernández Islands Conservancy

The Juan Fernández Archipelago is located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, 670 km off the coast of central Chile. The conservation research is supported by the Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF) and other collaborators and funders working to understand and protect this threatened and unique ecosystem.

El Archipiélago Juan Fernández está ubicado en el sureste del Océano Pacífico, 670 km de la costa central de Chile. Los estudios de conservación son apoyados por la Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF), un organismo del gobierno nacional de Chile, y en conjunto con otros colaboradores trabajando para conocer y proteger este amenazado y único ecosistema.
