Pink-footed Shearwater - Fardela Blanca - Conservation The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) selected six "species of common conservation concern" for the development of comprehensive conservation efforts in North America: leatherback turtle, humpback whale, pink-footed shearwater, burrowing owl, ferruginous hawk and black-tailed prairie dog. Read more about plans to conserve these six widely-distributed species. The publication of the North American Conservation Action Plans (NACAPs) for this species in November2005 represents the first step in an ambitious project for tri-national conservation as formulated by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States in cooperation with scientists, academics and environmental groups. The goals of a NACAP is to facilitate a long-term cooperation agenda for the conservation of the species throughout their ranges in North America.
The Pink-footed Shearwater NACAP outlines three key areas of research and conservation action: 1. Study of the migration from breeding colonies in the Juan Fernández Islands (Chile) to CEC waters in North America 2. Mapping of the distribution and abundance during the post-breeding dispersal in CEC waters 3. Capacity building to train local researchers in Mexico and central / south America to develop a comprehensive picture of the at-sea distribution and the trends in abundance of this species at-sea Conservation Status Links Back to Project Pages |
