In these recent paintings I've used the most
reduced palette - black and white - to explore the way pattern and
repetition create meaning. These works are "abstract"
in the sense that I do not try to render identifiable objects or
narratives. The object I'm interested in is the painting itself.
Of course, it may contain images that echo familiar things, sequences
and patterns; it may contain the illusion of space. The meaning
arises when the mind of the (contemplative) viewer encounters the
substance of the painting.
Recently I have been looking
at images found in traditional weavings from around the world,
as well as tantric paintings and mandalas. I am interested in
pattern and repetition, how we understand abstract works, how
painting might do what music does.
