Ecology of the threatened seabird community of the Juan Fernández
Islands, Chile.
Doctoral Research, UC Davis, 9/91-12/98.
· Field and laboratory study of diet and energy requirements of
adult and nestling Antarctic fulmarine petrels. Field research in Antarctica
from 1993-1996. Techniques included doubly labeled water for field metabolic
rates, water offloading for diet composition, morphometric measurements
of nestlings, nest monitoring for foraging trip length, respirometry for
resting metabolic rates and thermal profiles, and stable isotope analyses
to ascertain trophic level and diet composition. Addressed questions regarding
trophic segregation, differential provisioning strategies, nestling growth,
parental reproductive effort, and population-level energy flows.

limiting their distribution, including thermal sensitivity, parental effort
and energy/prey requirements, 1992-1995.
· Field metabolic rate of breeding Cassin's auklets using the doubly
labeled water technique, 1993.

Conducted independent research on breeding biology of fluttering shearwaters
and worked on
various avian conservation research projects including the taiko (magenta
petrel), black petrel,
saddleback, little spotted kiwi, and kaka.
